AThe super simple explanation

A is a tax form your employer gives you each year.

It shows how much you were paid and how much tax was taken out of your paychecks.

You use it to file your tax return.

BWhy does this even matter?

  • You need it to file your taxes accurately.
  • It shows whether enough tax was withheld, which affects whether you get a refund or owe money.
  • The IRS gets a copy too, so the numbers on your return should match.

COkay, how does it work?

Your employer withholds taxes from each paycheck based on your W-4.

DShow me an example

Two jobs, two W-2s

Alex worked at a café from January to June and at a bookstore from July to December.

Alex will get a W-2 from each employer and needs to include both on one tax return.

Illustrative example with made-up people and numbers — not current rates or rules.

EWalk me through it

  1. 1Watch your mail and your employer's payroll portal in late January.
  2. 2If you haven't received it by mid-February, ask your employer.
  3. 3Check that your name, Social Security number, and address are correct.
  4. 4Enter every W-2 you received when you file.
  5. 5Keep a copy with your tax records.

GCommon mistakes

  • Filing before you've received all your W-2s.
  • Ignoring a W-2 from a short job — it still has to be reported.
  • Confusing a W-2 (from your employer) with a W-4 (the form you fill out for your employer).
